The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila has congratulated Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her emergence as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Mr Gbajabiamila said Dr Iweala’s unanimous confirmation by the General Council of the WTO to head the body is as a result of her years of experience in the financial sector both at home and abroad.
The Speaker noted that the former two-time Finance Minister of Nigeria comes to office with a wealth of experience that spans several decades, saying her track record speaks volumes.
He said with her pedigree, he believes she would take the World Trade Organization to enviable heights during her term as the DG.
Gbajabiamila, who was elated by the news of Okonjo-Iweala’s emergence, said her confirmation has once again proved that Nigeria has experts that can compete favourably both at home and abroad.
He said as the first female and first African to head the WTO, the former Finance Minister and an ex-World Bank Director comes to the office at the right time.
While calling on the new WTO DG to make Nigeria and Africa proud, Gbajabiamila wished her a successful tenure in office.

The All Progressives Congress APC has Congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her confirmation as Director-General of the World Trade Organization, WTO, becoming the first woman and the first African to lead the global trade body.
The APC says it is proud to note that Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s mandate to head the WTO followed broad support from members of the global trade body.
In a statement, the Secretary, National Caretaker Committee of the party, Senator John Akpanudoedehe expressed confidence that Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, a renowned economist and Nigeria’s former finance minister, would successfully lead the needed reforms to reposition the WTO.
Senator Akpanudoedehe observed that the global COVID-19 pandemic had brought its challenges on the economies of member nation which Dr. Okonjo-Iweala had chosen to prioritise the global efforts to combat COVID-19.
He said for the marginalised groups, particularly women, the appointment of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala was a pointer that the world is fast changing and anybody would achieve any positive feat with hardwork, diligence and pursuit of excellence.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, has congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala on her appointment as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization.
In a statement by the Head of Media and Public Affairs of the Forum, Mr. Abdulrazaque Bello- Barkindo described the appointment as well deserved of an economist, who has served at the global financial institutions.
The statement says her tenure at the World Trade Organization will no doubt herald remarkable changes in the face of the current global economic challenges.

The Secretary General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, Dr. Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo has congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala over her confirmation as the new Director General of the World Trade Organization, WTO.
In a Statement on behalf of OPEC, Dr. Barkindo says the appointment of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is well deserved and very significant as she is the first woman, first black woman and indeed an African to occupy the position.
According to the OPEC Secretary General, the appointment of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala comes at an extremely challenging time but the world believes in her leadership skills occasioned by her career achievements, experience, deep knowledge astute judgement and negotiating skills and remain optimistic that she will deliver on the job.
