Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo state has described as unacceptable the level of destruction recorded at the Police headquarters and Correctional Service facility in Owerri by yet to be identified gunmen.

Speaking to newsmen after a visit to the facilities in Owerri, the governor who was accompanied by heads of security agencies in the state said the attack was to instill fear and make the people more vulnerable.

He said the government had set up an enquiry into the incident with a view to finding out the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Governor Uzodimma assured residents of the state of their safety noting that government and security agencies would be more proactive to forestall a reoccurrence.

Governor Uzodimma said more than one thousand eight hundred inmates were at the correctional service before they were freed by the gunmen but however noted that some of them had started returning voluntarily while others had been rearrested.

Meanwhile residents of the state have been going about their normal businesses though major roads leading to the Correctional Service Facility and Police headquarters in Owerri had been cordoned off and traffic diverted since the early hours of monday.
