The Federal Government Has received Eight Million Dollars worth of Personal Protective Equipment, PPEs, and Medical consumables from the United Nation’s Children Fund, UNICEF and partners.

The National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, NPHCDA and the Nigerian Center for Disease Control, NCDC, took the delivery of thousands of goggles, masks, gloves, gowns, boots, waste bins, hand sanitizers, chlorine, and other commodities in Abuja.

 

The Director General, NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, noted that the $8 million worth of personal protective equipment was the single largest donation provided to the country. since the NCDC had been leading on the public health response.

Dr Ihekweazu noted that the gesture was supported by health sector partners such as GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance and UNICEF, adding that PHCs were critical as they often serve as the first point of contact for suspected cases of COVID-19.

According to Executive Director, NPHCDA, Dr. Faisal Shuaib, Health workers in PHCs have continued to play important roles in the response system, hence the equipment would be distributed to all the primary health centers in the 774 local government areas in the country.

Dr Faisal thanked the partners, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and UNICEF for the collaboration in ensuring the protection of health workers.

The UNICEF country representative, Dr Peter Hawkins, recognized the Presidential steering committee for its exemplary leadership in responding to the pandemic, and pledged UNICEF continuous support to Nigeria.
