Protesting drivers

The busy Akure- Idanre Road was on Wednesday morning blocked by drivers who were protesting alleged exploitation by the leadership of their union.

The drivers who alleged the beat of one of their colleagues by the union officials said the blockade was meant to attract the attention of  government and other stakeholders to their plight.

One of the drivers who spoke with Positive fm, Mr. Toyin Ajisegiri explained that they had paid the “Aketi fee” of #300.00 for taxi and #500 for bus but the union staff still asked them for what they called loading fee which was contrary to the scheme of the government of Ondo State, claiming that government had restored their powers to run the union.

Positive fm gathered that a member of the union, Mr. Doyin Akintelure alias “Foto”, who refused to pay was physically assaulted by the union officials.

The driver allegedly beaten by his union officials for not paying loading fee.

Another victim of the incident, Mr. Ayodele Akinseye, said they did not intend to block the road but the union officials forced their passengers to disembark and this led to the crisis.

When contacted, a former Branch Chairman of NURTW in Idanre Local Government, Prince Adelanke Adegunsoye alias “Cobru” said he was not Awre of the allegations by the drivers and the subsequent protest as he was out of idanre Town.
