As the world celebrates this year’s Zero tolerance to female Genital mutilation or cutting with the theme “Accelerating investment to end FGM”, Stakeholders have reemphasized adequate sensitisation of rural women and Traditional birth Attendants, TBAs to end the practice.
The stakeholders charged the traditional birth Attendants in ondo state to become advocates of anti female genital mutilation to save the girl child.
The state coordinator of the NRHJN. Network of Reproductive Health in Nigeria ,Mrs Fatima muraina informed that a law had been put in place to prosecute anyone caught in the practice
She said that the network would continue to reach out to women in the rural areas who still engage in the practice.
Also the ondo state coordinator of inter Africa committee on harmful traditional practices affecting women and children,Mrs Margaret Adebayo highlighted the challenges and implications of the practice to excessive bleeding ,infection among others.
The president of the traditional birth Attendants in ondo state ,Mrs Mary Adaramoye said that they had been informed about the hazards.
In an interview with a consultant surgeon at the federal medicalcenter. Owo,Dr katung Aba told the TBAs to always encourage the Pregnant Women to visit hospitals regularly.
Another medical doctor Dr ayokunle dudu revealed female genital mutilation did not add any value to the girl child , hence the need to discard it.
When Positive fm sought the view of mothers, one Mrs joke adetola,said the practice should be criminalized while MRs abiodun adekunle insisted female genital mutilation was necessary to curb prostitution among female folks.
It is the belief that the practice of FGM will be eradicated with the support and collaboration of the stakeholders
