Some unidentified gunmen in the early hours of Wednesday stormed the residence of a Chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr. Sunday Frank Oputu and shot him dead.

According to reports, Mr. Frank-Oputu, who had also served as State Chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), was murdered at his residence at Bay-Bridge, Yenagoa.

Frank-Oputu, a founding member of the APC was shot dead through his window while asleep by yet to be identified gunmen.

He was reported to be having running litigation against the State leadership of his party the, APC and his community in Southern Ijaw local government area.

The late Sunday Frank-Oputu was expelled last year alongside eight others for alleged anti-Party activities.

There were claims that he was at the forefront of the struggle to rid his community of illegal oil bunkering activities of some unrepentant militants in the Egbematoru axis.

He recently, in conjunction with his community leadership, petitioned the military, DSS, and other security agencies over the activities of some unknown persons in the area

When contacted the spokesman for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Superintendent of Police, Mr. Asinimi Bustwat, who confirmed the incident said details would be made available to journalists later.

Meanwhile, The senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial district, Senator Cleopas Moses condemned the killing of Sunday Frank -Oputu and called on the people not to result to violence in settling their differences.

He further expressed sadness over the unfortunate killing of the APC Chieftain.

 

In the meantime, the Police in Bayelsa State have directed officers to intensify efforts to identify and arrest the perpetrators of the murder of a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Sunday Frank Oputu.

A statement by the Spokesman for the Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat says gunmen scaled the fence and gained access to the residence of Mr. Frank Oputu located at No. 1 Jonah Road Bay- Bridge, Kpansia, Yenagoa at about Eleven O’clock last night and fired several shots at him through the window of his bedroom, fatally injuring him.

The statement says the injured victim was rushed to Federal Medical Center, Yenagoa, where he was confirmed dead as his corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.

The statement further notes that Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command Ben Okolo re-assures members of the public on the Command’s resolved at ensuring the culprits are arrested and brought to book.

The Command urges members of the public to remain calm as investigations are ongoing.
