The new Executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council has visited the Chairman of the State Local Government Service Commission, Hon Femi Idris where the Union pleaded with the Commission to fasttrack creation of Local Government Information Department to cater for NUJ members in the third tier of government.


The visit is in continuation of efforts geared towards interfacing with key stakeholders towards attracting improved welfare packages for members of the union.


The Union’s State Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite who said the visit became necessary to tackle one of the long standing agitation of NUJ which is the creation of LG Information Department in the local government service, saying it will go a long way in enhancing professionalism in the discharge of duties at the grassroots.

Adegbite noted that considering the essential roles of Information Officers in promoting various laudable projects and policies of local government Chairmen and the commission, there is an urgent need for all the stakeholders including the Commission, the office of the Head of Service and other key offices.


The NUJ Chairman explained that the Union had started raising the issue with other stakeholders, adding that agitation for the creation of the local government information department had been in the front burner for decades.


In his response, Hon. femi Idris while acknowledging the sensitive roles journalists are playing, assured that his office is looking into the possibility of having Information Department in LG system as some states of the federation have also keyed into it.

Mr Idris also used the opportunity to assure members of the union of his continued support.
