When Buildings collapse, it is the failure of the building industry and the industry is failing because government failed to play its role .

This was the position of the National President of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, NITP, Mr Olutoyin Ayinde while speaking with Radio Nigeria in an exclusive Interview in Akure.

Mr Ayinde was in Akure for the 23rd edition of the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Program of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners , Ondo State Chapter.

The two day program is taking place from May 18th to 19th has as it’s theme ” Preparation Of Bid Proposals And Procurement Of Town Planning Services.

According to Ayinde ” When buildings collapse , it’s a failure of the building industry , why is building Industry failing , it is because of the weakness of government to play it’s role , I am saying government because it is government that has the power of enforcement ”

” When other sister bodies in the construction industry such as builders , engineers , estate valuers , surveyors e.t.c note some lapses and inform government and government fail to act because the infrastructure are not there , the professional bodies are handicapped ” he said.

The former Lagos commissioner however listed sharp practices and use of substandard materials as other factors responsible for the ugly development and also pointed out that if contractors had value for life , they would do the right thing.

 

He charged government to be alive to its responsibility of strict regulation of the building sector with emphasis on proper town planning for orderliness, aesthetics and general development.

Mr Ayinde as well encouraged developers and land owners to always follow due process to make the society safer.
