The House of Representatives has urged Federal government to involve the traditional institutions in tackling communal disputes.
This was sequel to a motion by a member from Plateau State, Ms Beni Lar, on the urgent need for intervention in Communal Clashes between Lyangit and Kumbwang Communities of Langtang North Local government of the state.
Ms Lar stated that in the last two weeks there has been back and forth clashes between two communities in the state which has led to loss of lives.
She said inter ethnic rivalry and disputes are getting out of hand and leave the traditional institutions powerless.
“The traditional institutions are not empowered the way they should be to be able resolve these issues. The traditional institutions across the nation need to be empowered through constitutional amendment”.
The lawmaker noted that Nigeria needed a mechanism to intervene in Communal clashes across the nation.
She observed that as an advocate for peace and conflict resolution, there is the need to for the House Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs to liase with relevant agencies to intervene in the clashes to forestall breakdown of order in the area.
