The Senator representing Kano Central at the National Assembly, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, on Moday finally announced his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Senator Shekarau made the declaration at his residence in Kano.
The Grand Ceremony was graced by the Presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, the party’s Board of Trustees Chairman, Walid Jibrin, the party’s national chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu and other members of the party.
Announcing his defection Senator Ibrahim Shekarau said he had written to the ward, local government , state chairman and national chairman of NNPP, notifying them of dumping the party and no more interested in the Senatorial seat ticket.
He noted that he had written to Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to announce his withdrawal from the senatorial race for Kano central under the NNPP.
In a remark, PDP national Chairman, Senator Iyorcha Ayu, commended Shekarau for sacrificing his senatorial ticket of the NNPP to join the PDP.
Some other PDP stalwarts in attendance included the party’s vice presidential candidate and Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa; governors of Sokoto and Taraba, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Darius Ishaku.
Others are former Vice President, Namadi Sambo, the chairman of the BOT of the party, former governors of Jigawa (Saminu Turaki and Sule Lamido), Sokoto (Attahiru Bafarawa), Kaduna (Ahmed Makarfi), Adamawa (Boni Haruna), among others.
