Nigeria and Poland are to deepen their relations through the signing and implementation of Memoranda of Understanding on agriculture, defence, and other areas of common interest.

President Buhari gave this indication in Abuja during a media briefing after receiving in audience, President Andrzej Duda of Poland.

The President said the two countries would see an increase in the level of trade, stressing that Nigeria would co-operate with Poland in the field of energy and manufacturing.

He said in view of the numerous global challenges, Nigeria would like to develop new mechanisms, such as regular Strategic Dialogues on International Issues.

President Buhari said Nigeria would also wish to encourage the extension of the co-operation to the sharing of knowledge and its uses to education institutions in areas such as Science and Technology, Information and Communication Technology, to help drive innovation in the two countries countries, and raise consciousness on global knowledge economy.

He commended the Polish Government for the assistance provided to the large number of refugees that fled into Poland from Ukraine, which included a significant number of Nigerians.

President Buhari also expressed gratitude to Poland for her generosity during Nigeria’s evacuation of her fleeing nationals.

The President told his guest that Nigeria was appreciative of the opportunities given to some of her nationals to remain in Poland to continue with their studies.

The Polish President, Andrzej Duda, who viewed his visit, which is the first, as important and honourable to Poland, stressed that Nigeria was the only African country with which Poland had signed an agreement on Strategic Dialogue.

He described the Memorandum of Understanding on Agriculture between the two countries as immensely important, especially in the light of the food security crisis being faced across the world.

He said part of the benefits of his visit was the perspective of increase in the supply of LNG gas and oil to Poland and the European Union.
