Members of the Board of Trustees of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, have paid a two – day working visit to the Company’s facilities in Lagos to have a first- hand information about the state of the equipment.

Led by the Chairman of the Board of Committee on Technical and Monitoring, Mr. Ekere Nsima, the members inspected TCN warehouse at Ojo,
Lagos-West substations in Ayobo and Alagbon, Ikoyi.

Speaking to newsmen after the inspections, Mr. Ekere Nsima announced that Transmission Company of Nigeria would acquire a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, SCADA, to check frequent grid collapse and energy rejection by Distribution Companies, DISCOs.

Mr. Nsima explained that the SCADA system is a software used to monitor and control an electrical grid system based on information collected from substations within the system.

He stated that the SCADA would also help to ascertain how much power is being generated and transmitted

Mr. Nsima said “this issue of grid collapse, I am happy, I am here with my colleagues. This board at inception was extremely concerned about grid collapse. It was becoming rampant and we set up adhoc committee that was chaired by Mallam Taoban, I was Co- chairman and we went round to see issues here and we come to understand that it was the issue of grid collapse and met the liability, which is a complex issue. It is not because we are in TCN but I can tell you the fault is not from us. We have seen what the issues are, a lot from GENCOS, from generation and even distribution because sometimes we tell them to take much of power but they will take less.”

He stated that the SCADA would also help to ascertain how much power is being generated and transmitted

He said when grid collapse became rampant, the board set up an Adhoc Committee to look into the matter and it was discovered that majority of fault was attributed to Generation Companies, GENCOs, and Distribution Companies DISCOs.

During the visit, Mr. Nsima, expressed happiness with the condition of equipments at Ojo warehouse and its Lagos-West substations in Ayobo and Alagbon, appealing to DISCOs and GENCOs to step up their game, work on their infrastructure and improve on their capacities to take power so that they can supply it to Nigerians.

“I call on distribution companies to step up their game, work on their infrastructure and improve on their capacities to take power so that they can distribute and let Nigerians enjoy some level of stability”, he said.

At Ojo warehouse, the General Manager, Equipment Maintenance, Mr. Chris Okonkwo took the Board of Trustees of the company to inspect newly purchased equipments that have not been distributed to substations, saying that after auditing, the TCN had about eighty nine billion naira worth of equipments in the warehouse in 2021.
