...organizes Free Health Care for members
The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ondo State Council has donated food items and toiletries to inmates of the state children correctional centre Akure.
The gesture is part of activities to celebrate the NUJ 2022 press week.
Leading a team of journalists to the home, the chairman of NUJ in Ondo State Prince Leke Adegbite said the union was at the facility to identify with the vulnerable and celebrate with them.
Prince Adegbite while empathizing with the inmates encouraged them to keep hope alive for a brighter future.
He called on government to intensify effort in implementing policies that would further reduce hunger and crime rate in the land.
Responding the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on women affairs, Mrs Kehinde Adeniran thanked the union for identifying with the children, saying government alone could not cater for the needs of the inmates.
Also in his words, the Director of Social welfare, Ministry of Women Affairs, Mr Adebayo Oyegunwa said plans were underway to evacuate vulnerable children roaming the streets for proper rehabilitation.
NUJ ORGANISES FREE HEALTH CARE FOR MEMBERS
The need for journalists to give priority to their health has been emphasised.
This came to fore as the Nigeria union of journalists NUJ Ondo State Council organised a free medical checkup for her members as part of activities for the 2022 nujĀ press week.
As early as 9 o’clock in morning members of the union alongside their spouses were seen at the secretariat to have their health status checked.
Part of the health services carried out include checking of blood pressure and blood sugar level as well as general health talk.
NUJ Chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite said most journalists were overwhelmed with work and had little time to check their health status.
Prince Adegbite noted that for members of the 4th estate of the realm to carry out their functions effectively, journalists must be in sound heath
Some journalists who benefited from the outreach expressed delight at the exercise and thanked the union for organising the free medical check.
The free medical outreach was carried out by the union in collaboration with Ondo State Hospital management board and the state primary health care agency.
