As sports men and women in the country anxiously await the commencement of the 21st edition of the national sports festival tagged Asaba 2022, a total number of 205 contingent and other welfare officers from Ondo State on Tuesday left Akure the state capital for Delta state, venue of the sporting event.

The team Ondo comprises 129 Athletes, 41 coaches, 15 organisers and other welfare officers who are to assist the athletes.

Speaking with journalists, the general manager Ondo State sports council, Mr Henry Babatunde said team Ondo would participate in 20 sports.

According to him, the choice of events and the number of athletes are carefully arrived at for competitive advantage.

He listed the state’s area of strength to include wrestling, table tennis, judo, swimming teakwando and para athletics.

Mr Babatunde assured the state that members of the team were fully prepared and well motivated to perform excellently in Asaba noting that athletes who win medals would be rewarded instantly as a way of encouraging them.

Addressing the contingent at a forum, Ondo State commissioner for youth and sports development Mr Bamidele Ologun said the athletes were not just going to Asaba for jamboree but to win gold medals and finish among the top three positions.

Also speaking, the team leader Aiku Oluwashola Johnson a para athlete was optimistic the team would surpass its previous achievements at the national sports festival.

Delta state won the last edition of the national sports festival staged in Benin Edo State while Ondo State finished eleventh at the same event with 10 gold,9 silver and 25 bronze.

According to the organisers of the national sports festival tagged Asaba 2022 the event starts on Wednesday, 30th November and would come to a close on the 10th December 2022.
