The National Human Rights Commission NHRC has called on International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims and Prisoners Rehabilitation and Welfare Action to ensure full and effective rehabilitation of victims of torture across the globe.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission Tony Ojukwu, made the call in Abuja at presentation of the Thematic report on cases of torture extra-judicial killings and enforced disappearances by the defunct Anti- Robbery Squad SARS and other Units of the Nigerian Police Force.

The report indicated that they were twenty cases of torture and ill treatment by SARS involving thirty eight petitioners as presented by the investigation panel

Chief Ojukwu who gave assurance that the commission would continue to do its best emphasized that the violators of human rights must be held accountable to serve as deterrent to others.

A member of the Independent Investigation Panel on Human Rights violation by the defunct SARS and other Units of the Nigerian Police Force, Dr. Garba Tetengi, explained that the report would be of tremendous impact to the protection of human rights in Nigeria.

The Chairperson, Governing Council of the National Human Rights Commission, Dr. Salamatu Suleiman said recommendations on the prosecution of human rights violators would help to ensure peace and and sustainable development for all.
