A middle-aged man, Sodiq Rofiu, was, on Wednesday, apprehended by residents of Eleso community in the Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State for allegedly smashing his mother’s head with a club in an attempt to perform a money ritual.

According to a community source, the suspect, a father of four, had earlier organised a prayer with some yet-to-be-identified clerics where he slaughtered a ram, which was used for the prayer.

Sodiq, a commercial driver, was said to have invited his mother from another community, Omi-Adio, within the same LGA to be part of the prayer.

Unknown to the mother, Sodiq locked the door and attacked her with a club after luring his wife and children out of the house.

It was learnt that the mother raised an alarm for help, a situation which led the neighbours to forcefully open the door to rescue the victim, who was bleeding profusely.

An eyewitness, who does not want to be mentioned in the print, said, “He wanted to take to his heels after discovering that residents had been alerted. But they gave him a hot chase and he was eventually apprehended and handed over to the law enforcement agents for investigation, while a small wooden box with white cloth, a sharp cutlass, as well as a club, were recovered from the place.”

When journalists visited the Omi-Adio Police Station and Amotekun office at Eleso, it was gathered that the suspect was still in the custody of the Amotekun
while the victim had been admitted to Emiloju Hospital, where she was receiving medical attention.

At the hospital, an elder sister of Sodiq who was attending to the victim simply introduced herself as Elizabeth. She denied the alleged money ritual, saying the suspect had a history of mental illness.

Speaking further, Elizabeth explained how Sodiq suffered from and was treated for mental illness about 10 years ago.

A top member of the Landlord Association, who simply introduced himself as Yemisi, revealed that the community had taken the decision to expel the suspect from the community for security reasons.
