The Senator representing Ondo North Senatorial District, Pastor Jide Ipinsagba has appealed for review of Customs duties and procedures.
The appeal was in view of the current challenges being faced by clearing agencies at the terminal ports and the resultant effects on Nigerians.
Senator Jide Ipinsagba made the call at a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Nigeria Customs Service held at the National Assembly.
The lawmaker who noted that Nigerians are suffering and in agoning made case for a balanced approach to cushion the effects of the exchange rate from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN on the activities of the clearing agencies as it has adverse effects on the citizens.
Senator Ipinsagba argued that if the Customs does not have control over the exchange rates, it should strike a balance on the tariff percentage in calculating custom duties.
He mentioned the delay in processing Pre-Arrival Assessment Report, PAAR and alleged malfunctioning of Customs equipment coupled with humongous charges and penalties.
According to Senator Ipinsagba, all the encumbrances in the processes are often reflected in the cost of the imported products and will invariably affect the end users.
He charged the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi and his team help bring succour to Nigerians due to the untold hardship being experienced.
