A former governorship candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Mr Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) has announced that he would not be contesting in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
Mr Jegede, who was the candidate of the PDP in 2016 and 2020 elections, noted that he was committed to making all necessary sacrifices to provide solutions to the problems of the party rather than join in compounding it.
Addressing his teeming supporters across the eighteen local government areas of the state, the PDP chieftain said he was more committed to ensuring victory for the PDP at the poll.
He explained that he made the decision after several intensive and extensive consultations with elders and stakeholders within the party.
Mr Jegede also said the party’s constitution was not receptive to zoning as it had been demonstrated through the election of successive governors in the state.
He noted that aspirants who were competent and distinguished in their various callings as well as loyal to the party should be given the opportunity to try their luck.
In a remark, a PDP leader, Mr Mayokun Akinmoladun commended Mr Jegede for sustaining the party in the last eight years and urged party leaders to ensure that the PDP did not collapse.
