Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu says the state government will demolish all buildings that do not conform to safety regulations around the site of the Dosumu Market fire on Lagos Island.

The governor stated this on Thursday when he visited the site with fire still burning for the fourth day, affecting fourteen buildings.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said initial report showed that the fire was caused by carelessness and the refusal of the people to allow rescue agencies to commence work immediately.

He said that all state agencies that had anything to do with building regulations had been mandated to report to markets on Lagos Island for integrity tests on buildings, while an audit of the Dosumu fire incident would be conducted before the market would reopen.

The governor said findings had shown that traders placed generators on rooftops and top floors of structures, while they also had other combustible materials inside the buildings.

Mr Sanwo-Olu said all residential buildings turned into markets and others found unfit for habitation would be demolished.

He said despite the tough measures the state government would also provide succour to affected traders to help them back on their feet.
