The early morning rains in many parts of Ondo State disrupted the workers day celebration from kicking off on schedule but the workers later gathered at the Gani Fawehinmi Arcade in Akure the State capital to observe the day .
The workers who came under the umbrella of affiliate unions of the NLC and TUC dressed in colourful uniforms.
Addressing the gathering, the Chairman , Ondo NLC , Comrade Victor Amoko and his TUC counterpart , Mr Clement Fatuase appealed for hazard allowance for workers and urged the federal government to address the fuel scarcity that had affected cost of transportation and feeding.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa said his administration would continue to promote industrial peace and operate a transparent government.
Governor Aiyedatiwa while saluting the doggedness, maturity of workers said Ondo State workers were ranked among the best in the country and his administration was giving premium attention to regular payment of salaries and pensions, steady payment of gratuity and payment of backlog of salaries which had brought relief to both serving and retired officers;
As a May Day gift , the governor announced that the head of service had been directed to commence next year’s promotion exercise before the close of the year to enable eligible workers get their 2025 promotion letter at the beginning of year 2025.
Governor Aiyedatiwa at the occasion announced the appointment of Mr Taiwo Bola as his Special adviser on union matters.
Comrade Bola was a former State President of NULGE.
Earlier, Head of Service , Mr Bayo Philip charged workers to give thier best as the governor would implement better wages for them.
The event also featured presentation of awards and match past by workers from different unions.
The theme of this year’s Workers Day celebration is “THE PEOPLE FIRST”
