Nigeria Association of Women Journalists NAWOJ has advocated for improved sanitary facilities in schools, hospitals, institutions, and markets across the country.
The National President of the association, Hajiya Aisha Ibrahim, made the call in a statement made available to newsmen .
She explained that statistics by the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that millions of women and girls do not have sufficient access to menstrual hygiene products or suitable sanitary facilities.
Comrade Aisha Ibrahim said that lack of appropriate sanitary facilities makes menstrual hygiene difficult to manage, and in some areas is an obstacle to girls’ school attendance.
She pointed out that girls often miss classes to cope with their periods and, in some cases, drop out after puberty.
She said, among the causes cited is the absence of sanitary infrastructures such as water, latrines, soap, or where they do exist. They do not offer the minimum of services to manage menstrual hygiene
