On the occasion of the International White Cane and Safety Day celebration, the Chairman , Nigeria Association of the Blind, Ondo State chapter, Mr Akilo Mathew has appealed to the State government for provision of adequate facilities at the State school for the blind to make learning and teaching easier for students and staff .
At an event marking the day in Akure, Mr Akilo emphasized on conducive learning environment to bring out the best from the students and enhance teachers’ productivity.
He noted that the infrastructure decay in the school called for prompt attention especially the dilapidated classrooms , administrative blocks and provision of 18 seater bus.
While appealing for unemployment of about forty graduates, the Chairman also called on the government to consider redesigning public drainages and roads for the sake of blind pedestrian safety.
He pointed out that for the visually impaired, independent mobility was essential but unsafe public infrastructure significantly limits their ability to navigate the communities freely.
In a submission, the chairman of the Ondo State Agency for persons with disability folasade Arise
said government would continue to support them and provide an enabling environment for them to strive.
Similarly, the Special Adviser to the governor on political affairs, Mr. Smart Omodubi also gave an assurance of government support .
In an interview, students of the School for the Blind, Mr. Oluwashina Oluwasola, Oyi Josephine, Alabi Vincent Emmanuel Adebanji, and Rejoice Modupe too requested for urgent attention to fix structures recently damaged by rainstorm in the school
