Stakeholders have advocated for proactive measures by the government to check substance abuse through implementation of policy that would check abusers and smugglers.
The stakeholders at a day workshop on the campaign against Drug addiction and other substance Abuse by cardinal Onaiyekan Foundation for peace and National council of Muslim youth organizations ,NACOMYO in Akure
One of the stakeholders, the Chief Imam of Akure,Sheik Al Imam Abdulrakeem identified idleness as one of the major reasons for abuse of drug which he attributed to lack of employment on the parts of the youths
The chief Imam appealed to the government to track producers and distributors of the illegal drugs to checkmate the act among youths.
Also speaking the Commandant of the National Drug law Enforcement Agency represented by the Deputy state commander of the Agency ,Mrs Yetunde Jeyifous called for community engagement, empowerment for youths and regular engagement of the people on the dangers of substance abuse.
She said NDLEA needs the support of every Nigerian to combat the act in the society.
Also speaking ,the permanent secretary of SIITA ,Dr Foluke Aladenola appealed to parents ,educators and community leaders to work together to prevent drug abuse and provide shelters for the victims.
Other stakeholders who spoke called for collaborative efforts towards eradicating the prevalence of drug menace in the society.
Similarly, the representative Of the Christian Association of Nigeria ,CAN ,pastor Solomon Arowosafe also stated that the Christian community would continue to engage it’s youths on dangers of drug abuse.
In an interview, the general manager of positive fm Akure Mrs Bunmi Olalere who was represented by Olufisoye Adenitan assured that the organization would continue to leverage on the media to continue to raise awareness on the dangers of illegal use of drugs on young people in the society .
