The Dean, Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, FUOYE, Prof. Chika Asogwa, has emphasized on the enduring significance of radio despite the digital advancements environment on the backdrop of the 2025 World Radio Day celebration with the theme ‘Radio and Climate change’.
Featuring on a live media chat, Prof. Asogwa, a Reverend Sister who spoke on World Radio Day, traced radio’s history from Marconi’s 1895 wireless transmission to Nigeria’s first broadcasts in 1932.
Prof. Asogwa charged Media organisation to use their at promoting campaign on climate change as it affects the people and environment.
She highlighted how digital technology has transformed radio, integrating internet streaming, podcasts, and social media engagement.
The Don noted that despite these innovations, radio remains crucial in rural areas, providing vital information on health, agriculture, and education.
Addressing modern challenges, Prof. Asogwa pointed to competition from digital platforms, declining advertising revenue, and regulatory issues.
She however maintained that radio continued to foster community connections, promote free expression, and adapt through innovative strategies like visual radio and AI-driven content personalization.
Prof. Asogwa concluded by asserting that online media has not replaced traditional radio but rather enhanced its accessibility and audience reach through digital integration.
